Ghetto Electric Hookup, Hewson & Cedar

Forums:

Ok I think there was a thread a while back complaining about the bump outs on the new houses at Cedar & Hewson which ain't no big thang.

I passed by it this morning and I almost forgot. The most ghetto of electrical hookups is on the new corner house at the SE corner of E Hewson & Cedar Street.

When I passed by it, the meter wasn't there but the lugs for it are, then there's an extension cored hot wired to the 3-phase hookup where the meter should be.

Basically, it's a 240V deathtrap. A kid throws a bucket of water on that thing and you have A) a dead kid and B ) the lights will be out for the entire block. Now that I remember it I'm calling PECO about it right now. The meter (or lack thereof) is right there on the street if anybody wants to go take a look-see. I'm sure it's hot, so don't touch.

I took a look-see, the electric isn't hooked up to the house yet, did you look up at all ? there are no wires attached to the place. Nice try, Chris your losing credibility .

The cable was pulled, then. I was there at 9:17 and there was an extension clearly hooked up to the box. Were there vehicles parked outside the house this morning? Is the meter box still exposed like I saw it? The box is not to be exposed like that under ANY circumstances.

Put a cover on it or put a meter on it. If I saw that crap I would not want to put down a bid offer for that house, EVER. Who knows what fun lurks under the sheetrock on the inside. What an unprofessional job.

I haven't done much of this lately, but I'm putting my Admin hat on and saying,

Dan, she only piped up because the owner of the building Jackpot Internet Cafe is in is also the owner of this building that has the unsecured line tap. She's a friend/relative.

I'm sure she'll have nothing but smarmy remarks to say anytime she's on this board.

Well Kenzo i hate to burst your little bubble
i highly doubt the the new houses have 3 phase and even if it did it wouldn't add up to 240 volts.
Sunnyday i am glad you took a look-see to see what was going on, it is perfectly legal according to the NEC(National Electrical Code) for the meter socket to be open under 2 conditions 1) the service is not hooked up. 2)if the power is hooked up you can have a meter ties and a cover on.

i doubt the contractor would leave an open meter, and it is winter what kids do you see running around with buckets of water in February???

Wrong. Just accept the fact that it's a hazard and fix it. It's silly to defend this issue. Be a good neighbor.

Yeah, what he said. Why is it so hard to just do it right and be respectful of your community? Sheesh.

Kenzo, I didn't see any 3phase hooked up, but Ill back you up on the running of the cords across the street to the boxes. Since you posted it a while ago, I haven't seen them up again, but I agree it looked ghetto and dangerous. Same as that pick up truck on that same street that has junk on it and missing windshields.

Meh it's the "Amish option". It's the latest fad in energy efficiency.
