Join us in this year’s Treecycling event! Last year’s participants volunteers helped recycle over 200 holiday trees from the 19125 zip code. That translates into over 4,800 pounds of mulch for local parks and over 2,080 square feet that would otherwise go into a landfill.
This year’s Treecycling event will also collect household electronics!
NKCDC, along with other partners, will chip fresh recycled trees directly into the Palmer Park Dog Depot at Palmer and Blair! A $5 donation is suggested to help defray costs.
See event details below:
Saturday, Jan 7th 9am – 12pm
Palmer Dog Depot, Palmer & Blair
Volunteers are needed too! To volunteer or get more info contact Tom Potts —

does anyone know if greensgrow is doing pickup again?
if not may i suggest a pickup service for future collections?
i don't own a car though i do like this program and have some electronics to dump too.
my tree is bigger than last years (when i took it to the rec center) and walking it to the other side of the neighborhood isn't gonna happen.

I dont think there is a pickup this year but I have inquired. I'll post here when I get more info. I think there was in past years, but it was too difficult to get trucks and manpower.

Bump!
So I confirmed no tree pickup this year. We do still need volunteers at the site.
Remember if you put your tree on the curb on Wednesday or Thursday night this week, it will be picked up for regular trash haul by the city and *not* recycled.

Just to confirm because I'm slow -- we can drop our trees off at Palmer and Blair for recycling on Saturday morning? I'm a little unclear if the place that is benefiting from the recycled trees is also the drop off location.

I'd like to, but I think dragging it would cause the wire things that the limbs are made of to come out of their holes on the center pole. Is it okay if I just disassemble it and put it back in its box before I bring it over?

Who wins the following?
-Biggest tree
-Smallest tree
-Most ridiculous delivery
(I almost dragged my tree behind my bike or car, but decided against it.)

I thought I could cram more in the back of a pickup. I wound up only being able to pack in four and a mini one. Easily there were 12 i could get on a simple up-and back through the hood. Next year If I could share out the cost of a rental I'd do a neighborhood sweep for a couple hours.

I think the funniest delivery was the guy who rode up on a bicycle with a tiny tree (maybe one and a half feet tall) and handed it off with out even getting off his bike or stopping. It was pretty funny.

I thought about that too...I would share the cost/my husband's muscle, but would need someone else to have the vehicle. Couldn't believe how many were out at the curb.

As long as we have trash day the day of the treecycle we've good opportunity to chip at least 50 more. I'd suggest some tools by the choppers too. I picked up two with plastic stands still on. Only way to get them off was to bust them.

Thanks for grabbing these! Wish I knew it was you, I wouldve said hello.
The problem with a roundup is that the suggested donations offset the cost of the chipper. If we dont get enough donations to cover the cost, it comes out of FNA/ORCA operating budget. When we do pickups, there are no donations. Kinda difficult to get around that.

How about having a fundraiser for it ahead of time, so we know for sure there's enough money to cover both the chipper and the pick-ups? How much additional funds are we talking for pick-ups? I would seriously help out with that...

Truck cost: I'd say it's a small percentage of what's collected.
From one of the sharing options—Zipcar or Philly Carshare (soon to be rebranded Wecar)—it's about $25–30 for 2 hours on a weekend day. You'd need the member of that service to volunteer time (i could in the future if zipcar does't vinegar me off). A donated pickup would be about the same for gas reimbursement i'd guess. An efficient operation could put a dent into straight up trashed trees.
Maybe a collection system could be devised ahead of time. Enough to make it worth our while.
