Capt. Cram did mention @ last week's FNA meeting that they would be doing this in targeted areas when there was a cluster of activity.

PPD needs something like ReadyNotifyPA where people can subscribe to receive specific district (24th, 26th) or city-wide alerts (Amber, Code Blue) and then get push notifications sent via email or text.

I bring this up because I'm sure I'm not the only person who sees a flyer left on the front of their house and puts it immediately into the trash without ever looking at it. Plus it wastes paper and creates litter.

Pure_Fishtown's picture

I like that the 26th is bringing it to our attention but I believe that distributing flyers door to door is a waste of manpower. If they need to flyer, I'd rather see them dropped off at neighborhood stores or even sent to the various schools and churches and, of course, the 2 local papers. ReadyNotifyPA is a good resource but there are a lot of people who don't use computers or cell phones, especially the elderly.

Did the 26th post something on here? I didn't see anything but I might have missed it.

That's true, re: the elderly. So it would be a good idea to also post fliers in businesses to try and reach them. Not only is distributing fliers door to door a waste of manpower, it's also littering.

A friend on Haggert said someone tried her door at 11:45 last night - luckily it was locked!

While most of us prefer online communication (it's been my primary method for almost 30 years), flyering is going to be the most inclusive way of hitting the broadest number of people, particularly in a relatively small area - such as a few blocks. Kudos to the 26th.

I agree, let's not criticize the 26th for not doing enough one day, then criticize the the method when they try to help.

I'm still curious to know how many crimes need to take place to prompt the flyering? I looked at the crimemap and it does not look like too many crimes have taken place. But there was the breaking an entering which leaves a sour taste.

I wish somebody would come investigate the stuff that keeps getting stolen from my house. My little brother says I probably just lose it, but I'm sure someone is taking it. My original movie poster from Leprechaun 2 was stolen two weeks ago. Last week I left a whole bag of M&Ms in the fridge and the next time I looked half of the bag was gone! Yesterday somebody took one of my Spongebob socks. I don't feel safe anymore.

I am sorry for your loss. You must be frightened beyond belief!

Thud - they will never come out for sponge bob socks! You must get in to the times and get yourself some phineas and ferb gear! If any of that goes missing, now that's top priority! I have a 5 year old step daughter if you need any more pointers!

You have a point. I often see thugs eyeing my Perry The Platypus socks.

There are quite a few reasons that we started the door flyer program. One reason is that not everybody out there has access to or uses computers. Alot of our older residents rely on easy-to-grasp infromation such as a door flyer. Also, when officers are out and about distributing these door flyers it brings back a little of the good old fashioned Police foot patrols back into the area. The officers and Captain Cram himself, enjoy walking out there meeting and greeting people. It helps build up a good rapport with the good people in the neighborhood and lets the criminals know we are out there as well. The flyers have been distibuted in several areas around fishtown and more are still to come.

P.S. A weekly crime report is published in the Spirit every week as well as any new crime bulletins or crime alerts that we are putting out. The door hanger is just one of many new crime strategies we are starting to explore.

bingo's picture

these are circling around northern liberties as well. there's a stack of cards from the 26th at one shot next to the flyers warning people about break-ins, too.

My car was hit Sunday nite on 2200 E Thompson st.. pro job, poped the locks..in/ouy qquick. rifkled the glovebox, took off witha tub of clothes from under back seat. luckily, no danage and the vakue was worthless to anyone ( other than a Gray colored Bushnell Sports Radar in black carry bag)..might get 20 bucks for it) meanwhile. walking and talking in the daytime doesnt help when all these crimes are happening at night captain. I've been on my porch since midnight and have yet to see any patrols in the area. If the crimes are at a rate that warrented your handing out flyers would think someone should be patroling at night when they happen( an dmake it obvious...like hit a siren now and then...shine your alley lights a little). heck, since we all seem tohave to listen to the almost nitely helicopter overhead hovering over I 95 carstops or checking the casino lots...how bout a call to them to perhaps fly over while around and LITE US UP . No telling what you might see.

kwhln215's picture

I didnt hear anything about it . But There is alot of new people on the block so i dont know everyone . It wouldnt surprise me with some of the losers that roam around this way

steveeboy's picture

well, the word on the block is that there is a group of losers on Almond across York who are doing all this petty crime lately. Seems like they expect others to pay for their drug habits. From what I have been told, both the old-head neighbors and the cops know who they are, but have yet to catch them in the act.

steveeboy's picture

Oh, and I saw the captain on the block last week, I walked the dog but missed him when I got back. I was going to thank him for his informative talk at Holy Name a few weeks back.

I got the reply and had all my game systems stolen plus a laptop computer. Filed a police report.
