Car break-in / FISHTOWN

Forums:

First time I've posted to this message board but I wanted to let Fishtown know about the car break-in that happened last night.

3 cars (including mine) on Thompson and York st were broken into last night about 2am. This seems to be a reoccurring thing on this block. I was parked on Thompson facing the new Planet Fitness and had my back passenger window broken. They stole CDs, all of my change and a few other things of little value.

After speaking with a few neighbors, they seem to think that it may be due to the Ye Old Blarney Stone Bar opening back up.

It has nothing to do with a bar or any other business . It has everything to do with the large group of junkies that roam Fishtown . Its the worst i have ever seen it in the 40 years ive been here .

Agreed. I've been in the Blarney several times and didn't think there was anything particularly unusual about it.

You cannot leave a nickel visible from the inside of your car or you risk a smash-n-grab. I've witnessed folks testing car door handles on Gaul St. months ago and one of my neighbors vehicles, a group of early 20-somethings were congregating around it trying to peek inside the vehicle to see if there was any good stuff inside.

I'm surprised my housemate hasn't had his car smashed yet. It's been keyed a zillion times over, though.

Yeah, they don't want the creeps in the bar either. Thieves will steal from anyone, and are bad for your business.
Was there some kind of goverment action causing these guys to get tossed off the free money train? Did they start requiring daily pee tests at the methadone clinics. (that they actually pay attention to/) Or could just be the mild weather.

I highly doubt it's the bar. That area has a lot of car beak-ins. I lived on Thompson by Huntingdon for 3 years and had my car broken into twice, both times multiple cars in the surrounding blocks got hit the same night.

I'm sorry to hear this happened. Planet Fitness has actually attracted quite a few thieves.

The night of that fake snow we got the other Friday, I left the passenger side window of my car down maybe 5 inches. I didn't come back out to the car until Sunday morning and was shocked to find it had remained untouched.

I saw a cop chase away from crusty looking dude when i walking thru the parking of PF on my way to CVS . He probably was scooping out cars .

I've always thought that ramp there to 95 was very attractive as a get away route. (I know most of these crimes are people walking about, but I've seen a couple of times when they try to rob something, or someone and hop right up on the highway.)

Crap. I usually park on York Street either in front of my office or in front of the pharmacy.

Hi! We're around the corner neighbors, I'm on Mercer.

I actually dont think it has anything to do with the bar, and I've been in the same place for 4 years now. My car has been hit twice, my house once.

So...um... if you're ever feeling like you might want to help me clean up that horrid lot, let me know. I guess I will be dragging the couch and the christmas trees in it now in front on my house tomorrow night, as now one seems to have figured out that leaving large items in that lot means they dont get picked up.

Yeah, don't ever think "they won't think this is valuable" because junkies don't use reason.

@jbette - can't 100% guarantee right away, but if you have a bad lot that needs cleaning, let me know where it is and we can probably get some church folk to clean it the first week of March

Yeah that lot needs guerilla gardening.

Speaking of good thing, the rec lot behind the Chug that ORCA cleaned up back during a scorching day last summer is still looking good. Those neighbors are on it like white on rice!

I get a happy vibe every time I walk past it.

i was just thinking that the other day.

frankford ave, especially around huntingdon, needs some major help.

Do not leave anything of value in plain sight in your car, not even a little change. A junkie will steal anything for a hit. He does not care about damage to your car. People who live this close to Kensington Avenue should know this. I am not a crusty looking dude.

Here I sit broken hearted, paid a quarter and only farted.

Are you speaking of the basketball court behind the Chug? I live right there.. the trash in that court has been kind of ridiculous lately. I don't know what it looked like before though. I just moved there in December. I try to keep the street as litter free as possible, but its an everyday task. Who is responsible for emptying the trash can on the court? It has been overflowing for about a month now. Thanks!

i don't think anyone is really responsible for that trash can. it's up to anyone who volunteers to put it out on trash day.

when we did the clean up it was pretty awful in and around the court. orca is always taking suggestions for clean up sites.

It was worse earlier this summer. Way worse. The rec site isn't managed right now so it's really up to neighbors to put the garbage on the pavement if they want it to get picked up on a regular basis.

If it's bad it can be nominated for an ORCA cleanup

I can imagine. Good to know its not managed. I'll empty the trash next week. Speaking of ORCA, when is the next meeting? I'd like to get involved.
