the good news thread

since there is a lot of bad blood already on fishtown 2.0, i'd like to continue the "good news" thread from fishtown 1.0. tonight, while coming home on the el from the world cafe, we were gifted two loaves of freshly baked jewish rye bread from a guy who worked at northern liberties bakery. initially, i thought he was trying to sell it, so i told him i didn't have any money (truth), but he said he didn't want any. we are currently in drunken rye-bread heaven, and it's quite nice.

Awesome!
I'd like to say that today was an excellent day.

Very productive afternoon in the office. Distributed bags full of Christmas toys to kids. Had a great Bible Study on science & faith (touched on everything from string theory to the "God" gene). Enjoyed lots of great laughs and food at the FNA Christmas party.

(I'd also add that the "bad blood" is really only on one thread and involves a very few number of people.)

Bad blood? Meh.

That thread was productive at first but then a certain individual wanted to turn it into an Internet tinkling contest reminiscent of 7th grade. It's nothing.

So let's see... the good news is that "Jackpot Internet Casino" was tossed out of this neighborhood by a strong-willed property owner, who I thank--and hopefully teaches anybody else who wants to crash our neighborhood with a sucky business like that, they can go drown themselves in the Delly.

And the Kisses-cookies at the holiday party were great. Addicted to those things.

between being featured in CULTURE magazine, and Craig LaBan's write up in Thursday's Inquirer, Ive pretty much had a wonderful week of sales with more to come. People are doing the unusual; they're buying original paintings.

I really should have taken one or two of those last night and just saved them until I got my sense of taste back.

sorry, when i said "bad blood", i was referring to the negative things about the neighborhood (break-ins, theft, etc.). poor word choice.

a) Meredith, Top Chef rocked this week. Totally watch it. Does anyone here watch Chopped or the Next Iron Chef? I'm kinda getting into those, too, although not nearly as much as my beloved Padma and Tom.

b) Good news for us? In the past maybe three weeks, my son has gotten his first two teeth, learned to clap, sorta figured out kisses and hugs...SORTA, said "dada" for sure and maybe a "mama" once or twice, and signed his first sign language sign to us (it was the sign for bottle, of course). I knew parenting would be a great experience. Everyone tells you that. But what I didn't expect was how much this kid would humble me. He makes ME feel honored to be able to be around HIM.

And I think that's enough mush out of me for, like, a year or so. Nothing to see here...move along, move along...

codergrrl's picture

The Food Network is literally the only channel that is ever on my TV. I can always tell when some little kid was in my room watching TV, cause the channel gets changed to 33 or whatever that La Liga soccer channel is.

This isn't really news, but I was just walking by Cohox and there were a group of what looked to be jr/sr high age kids playing a game of Croquet in the park. For some weird reason it made me happy to see that.

Alright, unearthing this for obvious reasons.

A neighbor on the street bought the vacant house next to me and has been working on it for a while. He knocked on my door yesterday afternoon during the rain and said he thought he heard my hose running while he was doing some work. He was right - it would have been left on for quite some time if he didnt take 5 minutes to give me a heads up. That thoughtfulness, and the willingness to go 5 minutes out of your way, that puts me in the Christmas spirit. Its very Fishtown too, I think.

Also, I dont know where this flying lighted christmas pig decoration lives in fishtown, but I want to shake these peoples hands --> https://twitter.com/#!/tartandsweet/status/149314149615284225/photo/1

I was thinking that maybe next year FNA could do a best holiday lights contest? South Philly is really giving us the business in that department right now.

hey, happy birthday miglarsh! that's my birthday too. stinks doesn't it? When it's during the week no one wants to hang out, and you can't really say we'll do it on the weekend cause it's either new year or people are recovering. p.s. hate getting presents wrapped in christmas paper. We deserve birthday paper just like everyone else!!!! well anyway, have a good birthday, hope you enjoy your day.

You've got it backwards. What you need is more practice. Now, go have a shot and a beer before work.

Since 6 I've been working on a DLL snap-in that was misbehaving, I'm rewriting an event pump that some idiot coded years ago and hasn't worked right for the last 3 years, I got a wawa 24-coffee and recharged on ciggies, and sent up all my expenses that I've been procrastinating on for 9 months.

Oh and that smartphone app for bp.org; had another terse exchange with Apple. I wish on them the fire of a thousand suns.
