So a little while back I was at the Metropolitan Bakery stand at Reading Terminal Market....
I started talking to the super nice lady running the stand, and I mentioned I lived in Fishtown. I told her it drives me nuts that Metro's bakery is right up the street from me, and I can't buy the bread there. She explained to me that if I knock on the door they would be more than happy to sell me whatever I desire. She said she's been telling the owners they should open a storefront at the bakery, but they are hesitant. The nice lady said I should organize people to create foot traffic to the bakery asking to buy goods. I think this is a good forum to get this started. Nothing beats fresh baked bread right out of the oven. If enough of us visit the bakery, maybe they will be more enthusiastic about a storefront...SPREAD THE WORD.

if there's a zoning meeting
if there's a zoning meeting on this I can almost guarantee a store front will not happen, at least on Marlborough, maybe Girard though. The bakery has been an issue for a long time from the trucks idling all night, blocking traffic to the employees smoking and sitting on neighbors steps. The bread is good, but they need to go a long way on community relations. I've had my car hit by one of the delivery trucks last winter, it was caught on camera and the bakery still denied it was one of their people.

They've been doing this since
They've been doing this since they opened. (Many, many years)
Just walk down the Wildey Street, and knock on the side door.
You go in and they show you what they have available.
They don't have everything all the time, but they have enough. Great parmesean bread.

I tried the Wildey Street
I tried the Wildey Street door today..knock,knock knock...no answer. So I walked up to someone on the Marborough St side taking a cig break and asked her if I could buy some bread. She said "unfortunately we don't sell to the public." Has the password changed?

I worked my way through
I worked my way through Temple at Metropolitan as a prep cook and baker. A bunch of my buddies worked there too. It used to be in the 1080 Building on Delaware Avenue. We did sell to the public in that space, but stopped after a while. The landlord there at the time was kind of a slimeball.
However, I was told if you wanted to get bread right from the bakery on Wildey, you have to call ahead to pick it up the next day. The way it worked before is that everything was pretty much made for the high end restaurants that order for the day. Then the rest was taken to the shops located around the city, like Rittenhouse and Reading Terminal. Call and ask: (215) 634-4100. I don't think their number has changed since I stopped working there in 1996.
Also, ask if Calvin Blackwell still works there. He was the best.

I've mentioned to a few
I've mentioned to a few people that I wish Metropolitan would open up at 206 East Girard, I think it would be the perfect space for them. Does anyone know who I should talk to about it?

Well, I have to admit, I
Well, I have to admit, I haven't been over there for quite a while. But when we did go, we just went on Saturday morning, and went in through the Wildey St. door. They showed us at least a half dozen different kinds of breads, and I believe small rolls and scone type things. Maybe they just don't do it anymore, as they are quite successful, and might not have extras.
Or maybe it was just my charming personality.
