I just finished conducting a check into the tire and rim thefts in the 26th District.
Since July 1, 2011 and December 29, 2011 there have been 24 Thefts from Autos where tires and rims have been stolen.
The 2 biggest areas of concern are in Northern Liberties (PSA #2) and the Fishtown/Kensington Area (PSA #3). Specifically 900-1200 blocks from 2nd to 6th Street in PSA #2 and from Susquehanna to Lehigh Ave between Sepviva and Richmond Streets in PSA #3.
There have been 7 vehicles during this time period with their tires and rims stolen in that pocket of PSA #3:
3 - Honda Fits
2 - Toyota sedans
1 - Hyundai sedan
1 - Lincoln sedan
There have been 9 vehicles during this time period with their tires and rims stolen in that small pocket of PSA #2:
2 - Honda Fits
2 - Other Honda sedans
1 - Cadillac sedan
1 - Chevy sedan
1 - Ford sedan
1 - Acura sedan
1 - Lincoln sedan
There were also 2 vehicles during this same time period that had their tires and rims stolen from the 1000 and 1200 blocks of Shackamaxon Street. These vehicles were a Toyota sedan and Chevy pickup.
The thieves seem to be targeting newer model cars (2000 - 2011 models) and seem to especially like Honda Fits. I was recently asked if tire locks were a deterrent but unfortunately I am unable to tell by looking at these reports. I believe that most newer cars have tire locks and figure with this many thefts they are probably not helping all that much. Your best prevention technique would be to park your car in a well lit area close to your home and to look out for each other.
The thieves were spotted once but unable to be caught. The best description we have on the offenders is 2 Latino males approximately 18-20 years old. One of the males was described to have long, puffy hair. If you come into contact with the offenders, please do not approach but rather call 911. If anybody has any information about these thieves or where the tires and rims are being fenced please report it to 911 or contact the 26th District at
We are doing everything we can to curb this rash of thefts in these areas.
