wegman's is heaven on earth. going to the cherry hill wegman's, however, is a rather terrifying experience.
Yes. So not worth having the option of 75 thousand varieties of yogurt/mustard/peanut butter/etc. Though, if one is making a liquor and gas run at the same time, it's sometimes worth a trip over the bridge.

Yeah, but you have to drive on that stretch of Rte. 1, which can stink royally.

Trader Joes is the Ikea of grocery stores. Every thing looks great and really high-end, but ...

But what? Why is their meat so red? It kinda scares me.

TJ has jumbo eggs and every time I have gotten them, EVERY ONE OF THEM HAS TWO YOLKS. Seriously. Like they are from mutant chickens. I don't buy them any more. They creep me out. I do like TJs for other stuff though. Their carne asada is so good I almost cried when I ate it.
Has opening a Wegman's in the city been brought up since the forum has been updated?I feel like we could really use a "Wegman's in the city" discussion.
Meh.. wegmans schwegmans. Yea they sell a lot of stuff but 25 varieties of anything is kind of useless to me, especially when it's all rather ordinary. Wegmans is good at packaging ordinary things and making them seem high end... like 15 different kinds of Brie that suburban housewives go nutso about. And their "house label" extra virgin olive oil that they get generic and slap their label on it (Colivita, which you can buy at Thriftway, is much better quality). I guess their breads are decent but nothing you can't get equal or better quality anywhere on 9th St. Maybe if they sold stuff like quality Iberico Jamon from Spain or house made sausage rather than 10 varieties of cryovac soprasatta made in a NY factory I'd get excited. If they sold some interesting mushrooms like oyster, porcini, morels I might make a special trip. If I want fresh washed rind cheeses like epoisses, winnemere or red hawk I'm going straight to DiBruno's.
Maybe they're not convenient boring one-stop shopping but places in the city like Claudios, D'Angelos, asian supermarkets, farmers markets, greensgrow and even Whole Foods/Trader Joes make it easy to stay away from wegmans. I like making the rounds at these places before a good dinner party. People in the city that understand better ingredients aren't fooled by wegmans. Maybe that’s why they don’t open here.
there. happy?

i'm almost certain they do. could have sworn i saw iberico ham, as well. might be wrong on both counts.
maybe they have oyster mushrooms. definitely not fresh porcini or morels (which are seasonal; fall) they might have serrano ham too but I doubt they carry authentic iberico. They might even have proscuitto di parma too. but again, it's all rather ordinary stuff i can find in Philly on 9th st or Reading Terminal.

true, i don't go out of my way for wegmans, but if i'm in the area and have to do grocery shopping it's a nice change.
on the grocery store topic, what does everyone think of the new superfresh?

Too overpriced to shop there on any regular basis, but that's true of all Superfresh stores.
Now, Superfresh has 75 thousand of the exact same item. Why? Why a dozen shelves of red wine vinegar or canned stock? I do like the "International" aisle though.
I'm regretting now ever saying the word "Wegman's" because now I hear this deafening derailment noise. Anyone else hear it?

The only thing impressive to me about Wegman's is beer in the store and prepared food. The beer selection in Collegeville is notable, not really much of interest in Cherry Hill despite the seperate store.
And why, for crying out loud, would I want to venture in suburbia to dodge 1000 suburban moms in their SUVs for that?

How's that different from dodging idiot city drivers and their bicycling counterparts?
Urban parents in their Priuses in the TJ/WF parking lots? Not exactly the same element.

Trader Joe's is 80% junk food.
Worth buying there: pizza dough; coffee; kefir; yoghurt; fizzy water; some cured meats and cheeses; some salsa; frozen veg.

Philly doesn't have flash mobs, it has packs of wild animals.

I've done the Save-A-Lot and Wegman's on the same shopping trip. Surprisingly I've saved quite a bit of money that way. Generic staples at the SAL, and then Wegman's store brand/generics.

Hows about that taxi cab driver who, for no logical reason had the ever loving poop kicked out of him because, well because it was a Sunday. It just seems that there's been a slight uptick in the amount of random and unprovoked beatings in and around this grand city of ours.

I only brought up the Mt.
I only brought up the Mt. Laurel cab thing because it's a recent cab attack similar to the ones in Center City, not trying to play off city vs. suburbs. I'm just demonstrating that this phenom isn't limited to Philadelphia.
The suburbs seem to be dealing with higher crime problems just like Philadelphia is. Is it a shock that crime levels in the city and the suburbs rise/fall in patterns that are similar? It shouldn't be.

Right. There are so many
Right. There are so many things about the Wegmans that they are putting into the suburbs that would actually be difficult to accomplish, if not detrimental, to the neighborhood.
A lot of Wegmans business comes from takeout, readymade food. That would seriously hurt all of the small shops and restaurants in the area. Plus, there is NO WAY that a variance for takeout beer would be granted for an urabm store. No way, no day.
They do very very careful analysis before building new stores - urban setting just do not fit their plans.
