What's the deal with Arctic Splash?

Hi guys, I'm a long-time lurker, first-time poster. I gotta ask, as a non-native Fishtowner, what's the deal with the Arctic Splash Iced Tea? I see the discarded cartons all over the place, and it's even the logo for this site. At first I thought it must be manufactured around here, but according to the carton it's from MA. So, what's the deal? How is this beverage so popular in this particular area?

sdm's picture

It's delicious and more readily available than Turkey Hill. That's why I drink it.

But I'm alway thankful that you tolerate us.

A) It's cheap
B ) Like the fish symbol with early Jesuits in Judea who identified each other out in public during the days of Roman persecution, being seen with an Arctic identifies you to others as being a river wards dweller without having to verbalize it.
C) The cardboard taste of an Arctic combined with a slice of pizza from the pizza truck cancels out, and it's actually quite a pleasant meal
D) It has like 9,000 calories in it so you can survive without rations for a day or longer on the stuff

Because it's so ubiquitous; you literally cannot walk fifty feet without seeing an empty carton on the ground.

sdm's picture

By that logic we should constantly be talking about empty heroin bags as well.

and pretty much unknown anywhere outside of this area. i always found it funny that it's from out of state. i wonder why roseburger's or turkey hill never caught on?

gotta get up and be somebody.

I don't think they've ever sold Turkey Hill in cartons. And even the smaller sized plastic bottles are a relatively more recent product addition.

I think this why we see so much of it, the Lehigh Valley Dairy Farms distributes Arctic Splash drink products to stores throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. Refreshing, economical and delicious!

The following flavors and sizes are available:

Orange: Half Pint, Pint, Half Gallon, Gallon
Fruit Punch: Half Pint, Pint, Half Gallon, Gallon
Lemon: Half Pint, Gallon
Iced Tea: Half Pint, Pint, Half Gallon, Gallon

Conflicting info...according to our local, trusty Shoprite...and the carton itself from what Inspectorpenfold was looking at, it's from "Dean Northeast" in Franklin MA. Check it out. Look in the tab "other info". It lists that as the manufacturer.

I wonder what the recipe is? Ground up tobacco leaves pulverized into a powder at the Altria plant, simple syrup, then finely filtered through cardboard fair-trade U-Haul boxes?

it's really weird. it's hard to see on the lv farms site, but the logo looks almost identical to the one on the shoprite site.

Me too.
I think its funny that everyone says its the cardboard carton that makes it good. They don't like to buy it by the gallon, because it tastes different.

Agreed. I dont think the board is openly hostile to people that really have something to say, just gotta choose your first post wisely.

If you come here to troll, they you are going to get what you give. But it has been a long time since I have been new around here, so I am probably not a good judge anymore.

Yes joining this board and then saying something REALLY stupid like "what's the deal we need some more dog parks around here, and why is there no place where I can dispose of my Dannon yogurt I have to take it all the way back home?"

I can't comment on its quality because I have never tried it. I bring it up because it so unique to this specific section of Philly. I haven't seen discarded cartons of this stuff on every block in other parts of the city, and I don't think I've seen it at all in the suburbs. I spent much of my life in the northern 'burbs. In that neck of the woods, the tea-flavored sugar-water of choice was Rosenberger's, affectionately known as "Rosie's." It made sense because it was made locally in Hatfield. That's why I found it baffling to discover that Arctic Splash came from MA. I wondered if there was some kind of local history to it that I was missing.

You're talking about Newcomer aren't you?

Seriously though I think you may be wearing rose colored glasses. Before I started coming on here - 3 or 4 years ago - I would meet people around the hood who would say "Yea, there's a message board, but everyone on there is really mean, so I stopped going on it."

There were a few moderators at one time.
One requested to be removed.
One passed away (RIP).
One was removed for repeated violations of the rules.
I removed Kat at one point where I was getting threats against myself and the other moderators" for moderating. It was obvious the person didn't know there was only one other moderator, but I wanted to be able to say there were no other moderators.

its just seemed weird to me that like at memphis market for example you can get any variety of Clover Farms milk products but not ICY TEA - which was the ice tea cult beverage of choice from where i grew up (made by clover farms, my fav dairy supplier). where i grew up we had a whole lot of the small farms around that contribute to clover farms, rosenberger's, and longeacre's (they used to sell their own milk products locally, but now are one of the suppliers for Natural by Nature which you can find at Whole Foods). funny that Lehigh Valley Dairy has a look-alike Arctic Splash beverage. in michigan you can get actual DEAN's branded milk which is delicious but somehow the LVD version just seems terrible to me even though one company is the umbrella for the other. oh well. milk tangent = over.
