We used to smoke(everything) and drink at the TLA, back in the day, and they even gave you cups of ice, if needed. (BYOB)
There were never any "hooligans" (its not soccer we're talking about!), until, of course, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" started showing at midnight...they were about as rowdy as it got. But then again, how worked up can you get watching "King of Hearts", or "Amarcord"?
Fun times, fun times.....

Yes the idea of replacing stadium seating with dinner tables during screenings of Iron Man would just fly over the heads of the residents in this neighborhood.
I have been to the Alamo Theater in Austin and it is awesome. What a fun experience. Only thing that would top it is if you could still smoke in the theater. ha. Kidding. It works in some cities, I could see it working here at some point too.
If anyone is looking for an indie movie theater experience, check out the 941 Theater on Front Street in Northern Liberties. They don't officially open until this fall, but here's a link to their blog:
If you go down during the later shows you will run into these problems. This happens at other theaters too. Not just the riverview. If i do go I prefer the earlier afternoon showings. We all know the weirdo's come out at night.

I think Simmer's statement is dead racist. Look at who is in Riverview during the daytime. He refers to them as hooligans. I might refer to them by another term. It's a sugarcoated/whitewashed, whatever you want to call statement, gimme a break!!
You are starting to sound like the soap box lady and she's REALLY smart. Good catch there Frank
Ive been to Riverview to see a good movie in the afternoon last year and all that simmer describes is true. One guy on his cell giving driving directions as if he's outside, yelling almost. A woman turned around to ask if he'd take it outside and he threatened her. His 3 kids were all crying or talking. Good times. That theater sucks big time and I suspect it really is the managements fault more than anything.
Ive been to the theater on Broad and they are really very strict with security and I felt really safe. The theater was fool of all them hooligan-looking peeps and yet not a problem arose.
As for the beer idea... YEAH!
Anyone that's spent time in Chicago may be familiar with a wonderful place called the View N' Brew. I thought it impossible to see a movie in such a situation but it turned out great. I saw Snatch there and there were bar tables instead of rows of seats. Table service never interrupted the movie either. Perhaps the very thick accents of the dialog kept everyone quiet to discern what was being said (?).
I think that concept is way too smart to ever happen here. Hope Im wrong.
Last thing we need is another darn artsy theater place. Talk about inappropriate placment!
Stein's right by the way, if you handle a business right, you can keep the riff raff out.
