I think Simmer's statement is dead racist. Look at who is in Riverview during the daytime. He refers to them as hooligans. I might refer to them by another term. It's a sugarcoated/whitewashed, whatever you want to call statement, gimme a break!!

not that the global thrift is going to become this at all. i just think probably the neighborhood would be better off with a theater-type place than another live music venue (never thought i would say that about fishtown...). a little more variety, tis all.
i'd also suggest maybe looking at north bowl for an example of a similar kind of establishment where you have a concept (bowling alley) that has the danger of being overrun with teenager hooligans and ruined, but isn't because of strong management and social pressure (ie. making it a place for yuppies).
what happens at the riverview is more about the management there than anything else.

do you really think a bunch of hooligans are going to consistently roll up to a theater that costs as much as busfare down to the riverview + ticket, only shows the movie they want to see at a specific time, doesn't have popcorn and nachos, and is full of hipsters and yuppies?
YES! Have you been to the theater on Columbus blvd lately? there arent too many hooligans buying popcorn and nachos. as a matter of fact, the last time I went there there was no one in there spending money on concessions. They couldnt care less about who is in the movie with them. It could be a theater full of nazi drag queens (if that exists) and they wouldnt care. They run the theater in 5 seconds cause everyone is afraid. They take the bus there, pay for one movie and then sneak in to all the rest. They spend the entire day there. they dont care how much a movie costs cause they are only paying for one. im not worried about No LIbs and fishtown. Im worried about Kensington and the like. think about it. the bad element from those neighborhoods can simply jump on the EL. It will deliver them right there! What do they care if you are showing Labyrinth. THey arent watching the movie anyway! You could have show Brokeback Mtn and they wouldnt care. They are there to throw stuff at the screen and scream and yell and be out of their no AC house. I sure hope it works but my advice to them is to monitor things. They can do it right by inacting all kinds of rules. Such as no one under 17 in any r rated movie after 8pm,metal detectors and ushers that really throw you out if you talk. I hope it works I really do, I dont want to come off as negative

these theaters are definitely in affluent neighborhoods.
but NoLibs/Fishtown is basically an affluent neighborhood. perhaps not million dollar homes, exotic cars, and children in boarding school affluent, but definitely young people without families and plenty of disposable income for entertainment affluent.
and sure they have first run movies, but you also see that they are showing labyrinth (with live music) and a streetcar named desire, etc etc.
its all in when you play movies, how much it costs, what kind of food stuffs are sold.

that is the problem (if you even think there is a problem) with the bridge theater in west philly. it tries to be a nice theater without giving up all the things people are used to in a regular theater.

Well the first thing I would ask ya is, Where are these theaters? are they in the city? Suburbs? Affluent neighborhoods? Second is, what do you mean by the type of movies you play. I went on their website and they are showing the same movies that Columbus blvd plays. Tropic Thunder, Pineapple express, etc. Im all for the theater I think it would be great I just have my doubts and it can attract the wrong element. Even worse than the casinos!!
P.S. Johnny Brendas doesnt even have TVs and now you want me to imagine if they had a theater?!?!?! Just kidding!

its more of a hipster/yuppie ritz kind of crowd. you control the type of crowd by controlling the movies that are played and the food/drinks that are served.
think along the lines of if johnny brenda's had a theater instead of a concert space upstairs.

Id love a theater there but
Id love a theater there but as of lately the theater going experience is so horrible. People talking through the entire movie, texting their friends, bringing in babies to R rated movies. And add beer to the mix, YIKES! Do you remember what happened to the movie theater on Broad St on opening night? There was a shooting! Have you been to the movie theater on Columbus Blvd lately? Can you imagine that crowd with drinks in them? DOUBLE YIKES! Last time I went there, I heard about 10 minutes of the movie. There were people actually standing up in the theater to yell at their friend in the back. I went and told an usher to ask that person to leave and the usher said and I quote..."there is nothing we can do." I asked for my money back and I was told that refunds are not given half way through the movie. I said fine, then tell the people to stop talking. Again, "Sir, there is nothing we can do."
"Then give me my money back."
"We cant do that, the movie is halfway over."
"Can I see the manager?"
"He is busy."
"Well I'd like to see him."
"Ill see if I can find him." says the usher.
Manager comes over and I tell him what happens. what does he say?
"SIr, there is nothing we can do."
I said, "You cannot go in there and tell the people to be quiet."
The manager says and get this "would you?!?!"
I was floored.
I asked for my money back. He said that the best he can do is give me a credit.
So I took it, sold it on ebay for 1 dollar less than I paid. Ill never go back.
I cant imagine the one at the Global Thrift would be any better. Then Hollywood
wonders why people arent giong to the movies and bootlegging their product.
