This is the graphic-novel fictionalized version of the Jason Sweeney murder.

(side note: I accidentally typed "Joey Sweeney" at first instead of "Jason Sweeney". I must be subconsciously still thinking of that Philebrity slam on Fishtown.)

Most real writers spend the time in the courtroom, listening to the facts.

The true story about this

Ftown66's picture

The true story about this event is amazing in it self. I don't see no reason at all to fictionalize it for any reason. The true story will shock and amaze people in it self. This is probably what he is going for anyway. Do proper research on the facts and the case. He says he tried but couldn't get to the real facts. I don't believe this because these court records and all the info is available through the courts. Usually you can arrange to get things like court transcripts with a fee for processing and printing. I doubt he even tried.

I think you're partly right,

Jeffro's picture

I think you're partly right, Dan. I feel like this kid was fascinated by what he read in the newspaper and decided to use it for his work, without considering how it would land on the victim's family and friends. I don't think it started out with delusions of wealth, as indy comics aren't exactly a lucrative business. I don't think this kid is smart enough to see that his book would see wide range publication.

I'd be less bothered if there were any prevalent moral compass in the story, but there isn't.

Kat, I'm hesitant to cover this for two reasons:

1) All publicity is good publicity, and I don't want to help sell any copies of this.

2) The release of the book has to be painful for the families involved, and I don't want to be responsible for stirring the pot even more by having it all over the paper.

For now I think the best thing to do is let it be.

I didn't like the comic for reasons mentioned already by Jeff and Ftown66, so I'm not going to go on a rant. I'll just add that I found the story itself to be convoluted, the characters practically indiscernible from each other (which happens when you try to write a 'based on a true story' without even interviewing your subjects and doing your research), and the atmosphere he presented didn't really "feel" like Fishtown (again, didn't do his homework).

I don't know if it's JUST dollar signs.

Our culture has a great fascination with this kind of stuff.

I understand Jeffro - I'm sorry, I spoke without thinking (gee, like that never happens...). It is just so horrible and it makes me crazy that people can benefit from others tragedy and pain.

I am afraid that might stir up more pain for the Sweeney family, Kat. I pray that they are coping these days, and wouldn't want to add to their suffering.

How horrible. And you're right - it's the dollar signs he sees in his beady little eyes. How devastating for the Sweeny family and the whole neighborhood. Just gross.

It just really bugs me that

Jeffro's picture

It just really bugs me that the kid wrote this comic entirely from research from the newspaper and news, never making contact with the heart of this tragedy. That is a cowardly way to create. He doesn't even cleverly mask the event in well-written fiction. Any parts he did take the time to make up were very poorly written, with one-dimensional characters, dialogue, and events. He doesn't even humanize the victim.

Even when I take a step back, objectively setting my sympathy aside, I feel that from the standpoint of storytelling, this is just really bad and lazy writing. Sadly, a lot of people are going to buy it and think this is the way this neighborhood is. Furthermore, because most people look at comics as a "less-than" art form, the less intelligent readers will hail this as "bold".

This is bad for the neighborhood on many levels.

The thing that gets me is

Ftown66's picture

The thing that gets me is the one who turned evidence against them is still roaming the neighborhood free. He lived around the corner from me on tulip. This is where they all met after the murder to wash up and get high. All the murderers except the kids best friend lived within a block and a half from. I knew all of them just to see. The two brothers lived on Columbia and the girlfriend lived up the street from me on palmer. This was the most shocking murder to because I actually knew the participants. It hits home when you are that close to something like this. I was never really shocked about any murder that occurred in the city until this one because it happened in my neighborhood.
