Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold milk chocolate coins from China (WARNING!!)

With Halloween rapidly approaching, I wanted to make sure everyone has heard about the dangers in Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold milk chocolate coins imported from China. The candy is being recalled after testing positive for the industrial chemical melamine, a substance at the center of the tainted milk controversy in China that has been implicated in the deaths of four infants and the sickening of 54,000 others. These coins have been sold at Costco, Target, CVS, and other places. Please check all of the candy your children receive this Halloween.

This is from Wikipedia: "Melamine by itself is nontoxic in low doses, but when combined with cyanuric acid [as the Chinese were apparently doing and adding to dairy products] it can cause fatal kidney stones due to the formation of an insoluble melamine cyanurate. Melamine is described as being 'Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause cancer or reproductive damage. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant.' However, the toxic dose is on a par with common table salt."

They still make melamine Dishes' if you look at all the Restaurant Supply stores' they are still in use

Probably so. I always prefered ceramic or stoneware over plastics. The problem with ceramic plates from china is that they can contain lead which is still used in abundance in china or other harmful things. If they are not fired at the appropriate tempratures when made they can leach out into your food.

I just had a strange thought: Weren't cheap dishes made out of melamine at one time (sold and probably made in the US)? They were a kind of hard plastic and used to scratch pretty easily.

This is why i stay away from anything food related that is made in china. I include tablewares to like bowls, cups and plates. If you ever go to the dollar stores that sell can goods most of them are chinese made.

They said that about the infant formula, but in some ethnic markets they found a few cans on the shelves.

Thanks for the warning - you never can be too careful about this stuff.
