Wasn't there a different thread that said that only part of the space would be used as a restaurant, with seating for much less than 600, while the rest of the place would be a standing-room-only type theater space?

Ehhhhhh...I thought it seemed clear that 2014 was just trying to say that SOME people believe that Fishtown needs a rebirthing, not that HE believes that.
I'm disappointed that Mr. Hornik did not get a chance to really work with the community to create something that was both profitable for him, but satisfactory for the neighborhood. I hope that the people who vehemently opposed him will be happy with the space staying empty, with its original, beautiful details covered by that gross facade. Guess they figured that at least THAT building didn't need a rebirth.
I wonder to what degree this
I wonder to what degree this was prompted by local opposition,
and to what degree it was prompted simply by the economy.

I'm sure this will disappoint those who had pinned their hopes on this project being the catalyst for the rebirth of Fishtown. It is a shame that the building won't be fixed up...maybe someday.
please explain the rebirth of fishtown, i thought it was doing pretty alright the way it is.

The FNA Zoning Committee was contacted on Friday by the developer for the Jumbo Theater. He has decided to abandon this project.

I've been open-minded about this but the more I've heard from people (supposedly) 'in the know' about it the less it comes across as a positive.
It definitely wouldn't be any competition for JB's---that's not even a speck of my thinking here---it's just that I'm a little suspect about this maybe being a Trojan Horse that sounds good as a proposal but in actual practice might be the kind of problem spot this neighborhood already has a history with. The space is basically a retrofitted warehouse that can accomodate 600 people. We're not talking about a brewpub or a late-night spot to have a nightcap and some live jazz. It's more like empty hundreds of 'young adults' at 2 a.m. underneath an El that stops running at midnight. Not the best dynamic, imo.
I'm curious how they're presenting it, however.

Yes, they presented their application to the EKNA Zoning Committee (of which I am a member) on Wednesday. A bunch of folks who live right near the 26th were at the meeting and expressed support, so we will be supporting the application with the caveat that the basement be used for something other than a day care, since the original day care tenant has now backed out of the deal. The first floor will be leased entirely by PFCU, but they will sublease a portion of it out, at least for the first few years. The second floor will be offices, and the third floor will be four apts. PFCU has expressed a desire to hire from within the immediate community and is open to sub-leasing to a local business, as well. The developer said they have already looked into the rules behind historical buildings and will renovate the exterior to those standards. That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. Sorry for the hijack!
