Hey everyone! My bf and I are lookin to move into Fishtown very soon. We're from the suburbs so of course we've heard stories of Fishtown being bad. But I just gotta say...after reading this forum I've never seen a group of people more dedicated to cleaning this place up and being so neighborly! We don't have that around here, we don't even talk to our neighbors. Seems like it's not as bad as people made it out to seem...and I have friends who have lived there in the last year and didn't want to leave. Can anyone recommend the areas to stay out of? We're lookin to rent a house.
Thanks
Dee

That is my new favorite quote ever on this board--and so true. Happens to all of us. If you decide to live here, welcome to Fishtown.
It is far from
It is far from perfect............
On Thursday night 4 or 5 driver side mirrors were vandalized on my block. (Mine included) One would say I live on a "decent" block
- so yea it's the city and there are idiots out there. I just wish I had the chance to discuss proper etiquette as it pertains to other people's property with those delinquents using their own weapons for emphasis.
That being said, it is still Home.

Welcome,
I have THE BEST neighbors-Maybe explore the hood on bike, go to a few functions, enjoy!!!
If you decide to move here best of luck!!!
But really, full of drugs and dirty needle on the ground? Really? Not As BAD as people made it out to seem? Are you surprised some Fishtowners were offended? I find that statement offensive. Maybe not the best opening when asking for advice-
It is the city.
Fishtown is a cool place to live.
Thank you for the welcoming. I'm not surprised, but I didn't open with that. I only mentioned that when people responded negatively to my post so I could elaborate on why people in the suburbs think that Fishtown and the city in general is bad and also that I had read it on this forum.

I get ya...I wasn't tryin to put Fishtown down or anything, I was tryin to compliment it, but it came out the wrong way over the internet.
Sorry I am slow at responding but I am havin a hard time keeping up with who wrote what and on this board and the order of which the conversation it went.

I don't want this to seem like an attack, but UGH. For the most part, I've refrained from the debate over the past few years of new vs. old in this neighborhood. As Dan, Brooke, and a few others can tell you, I used to rage against new neighbors on this forum. I didn't want outsiders changing ANYTHING about my neighborhood. But I just got exhausted and frustrated trying to change opinions that were different from mine (sometimes they differ in big ways, sometimes in small). Over the past four or five years, I've learned to accept and appreciate some of the changes brought to Fishtown by our new neighbors. I've even made quite a few new friends. But until I die, I will always acknowledge the generations of lifelong neighbors who work so hard to keep this neighborhood as nice as it is. I mean, if it was so bad, we wouldn't have had such an influx of new neighbors. It's not just our geographical proximity to Center City or because it's affordable. People moved here because compared to other neighborhoods, Fishtown is an appealing place to live in this city.
I started writing a really long rant here about how this place has never been "bad" or worse than anywhere else. I also started to argue against the notion of suburban people thinking this place needed "cleaning up", because all places need cleaning up in one way or another (depending on your standards of "clean").
But I'm gonna stop myself and simply say without sarcasm or anger: Welcome to the neighborhood. Visit here. Rent here. Move here. See if you like it. If you do, that's swell. Treat it good. I mean that. This is America. Good luck to you, Dee.
PS - Dan - do you know the spellcheck on the forum still doesn't recognize "Fishtown" as a word? Can we fix that?
Thank you Jeffro...I complete second this... I have lived here all my life and feel exactly the same way!!
Welcome to the neighborhood, but this is a trademark neighborhood, there are certain things here that the "lifers" will probably never accept as change. However, cleaning it up, is a great thing. Alot of us have been cleaning this neighborhood up for years.
Best of luck with your move and welcome to FISHTOWN!

Welcome to the hood. You'll love it.
It's safe, there are things to do, the neighbors are cool, there is parking, and you're close to Center City.
Just don't get too near to any hipsters.
(actually, the hipsters are pretty cool... a bit different, but cool.)
So glad someone got the Tony
So glad someone got the Tony Danza reference. He now lives in NOLIBS. He actually told a reporter he almost moved to Fishtown but was afraid of getting beaten up if were spontaneously break into a rendition of Pennies From Heaven off his new cd.
