Anger over bicyclist treatment
PHILADELPHIA. A few days after one of their own suffered serious facial injuries in a hit-and-run crash, city bicycle messengers upset with what one courier describes as "rising anti-cycling sentiment" are rallying at LOVE Park this evening.
Apparently the Philadelphia Weekly decided to write on behalf of and from the point of people that actually ride bikes:
"For me, a bicyclist and a driver, this brings up a number of questions:
Rachel Fletcher, a member of the Philadelphia Bicycle Messengers Assn., was on a bike early Wednesday morning when she was struck by a car. Members of the PBMA will demonstrate at 5:30 pm Monday in Love Park.
Have any of these writers ever ridden a so-called "brakeless bike"?
Do any of these writers regularly ride in Center City period?"
I grew up in philly and now that I think of it, I would ask the same question. Pavement reminds me more of street. "hit the pavement" Streets are paved to me. I do understand it is also used as sidewalk around here too. It's one of those things.
as for the article linked here. I found the writer to be below the debating level of even f'town.us. He was clearly trying to start an easy argument. I do find the responses below the article more articulate and thought out though.
Here are some faves:
If the driving culture in this city is a general disregard for the rules of the road and the rules of a civil and genteel society, how can one expect the bicyclists to follow the same?
I don't know about you guys but I would not want to be behind a bicyclist who is following the rules of the road to the letter. You want to be stuck behind someone who can only go up to 15-20 miles per hour? I think not. You want bicyclists to stop at all red lights? What are you going to do when you have 5 or 10 of them at the light and there is no room for you to go around them when the light turns green? Be careful what you ask for.
In what world does half of TWO streets within a network of HUNDREDS equate to 50%?

In Fishtown, a pavement (or payment, as it is often mispronounced), is the sidewalk. I've lived a sheltered life, but as far as I know, have never encountered a pavement in a street. I've encountered paved streets, but thats a horse of a different color!

Yeah, my mother calls it the pavement; but dad called it the sidewalk.
I call it both; and know what people mean with they say pavement or sidewalk.
