No loss is good in my eyes , But Its thier jobs and they are the best at it .
Stien there is no win/lose in war because of people dying but win and lose regarding if we complete our objective .

My cousin matt has been in wounded twice in battle , Once in somilia and then three years ago in afghanistan and he is glad to back in two months . In the most populated areas of afghanistan its 1000 % times better and Iraq is almost complete

I'm coming around to th belief that a stable and democratic Afghanistan (and Iraq for that matter) is next to impossible in any realistic timeframe. Their culture and social norms are so different from what we're accustomed to, that it's probably naive to think that we can create a democratic society in a country that is dominated by tribal alliances. We've been there for 8 years now and I see no end in sight. What are we trying to accomplish? What's the exit strategy? What can we learn from prior attempts to subdue the region (British and Soviet efforts come to mind)?

I was in favor of the Afghanistan war (Iraq, not so much), but I'm really starting to doubt whether the loss in American lives and resources is worth it. Especially considering nobody can clearly state what we've accomplished there over the past 8 years and what is a realistic point where we can say our job here is done.

LOL@ using win/lose

LOL@ using win/lose terminology with respect to wars.

It's interesting watching the evolution of their targets of hate go from black people to "hipsters," both of which are seen as diseases in the urban body.

Well Iraq was a 100 % win - Our objective was to take out sadaam and install a new government . WIN
Afghanistan is a very different . No way we lose but to call a win will be hard if that makes any sense . IF we get out the foriegn fighters ( all 100 of then WHAT A JOKE THAT IS ) and stablize that country enough for some change it will be close enough

Larry99's picture

Haha, well, MM is entertaining as always but some of his typically over the top claims are misguided or just flat out wrong - such as comparing our involvement there with the Soviet invasion during the 80s or there being less than 100 al-Qaeda left there or comparing Obama to Bush (c'mon really now?).

It's not about what's there now, it's about what we don’t want there in the future. MMs letter makes no mention of the Taliban or helping the Afghan army or local law enforcement or the civilian population or the need to forge relationships with our NATO allies in order to fight future threats of terrorism around the globe. Even during his election campaign, Obama stressed the need to get out of Iraq in order to devote resources to fight the real threats in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

These "wars" ...although I'm not sure if we should be calling them wars since the word implies a winner and loser, it's more about minimizing damage and threats from terrorism... but these wars against terrorism will be going on for the foreseeable future. It's the reality of the 21st century. I'm not sure why MM or anyone is so surprised about all this.

Time will tell if this was the right decision. However, I don't think resorting to isolationism is the right answer either.

This is OUR war and WILL NOT

boylek512's picture

This is OUR war and WILL NOT be leaving in 2011 like the President said . We went after the people who killed over 3000 of our brother and sisters and we need to stay and make sure they dont have free reing . I hate having my family over there in danger BUT its thier jobs and they are proud to be there . We can leave Iraq soon but there is no way in hell we leave afghanistan within the next 5 years
