Car Jacking -- UPDATE

Pure_Fishtown's picture

Not that this is Fishtown, I just wanted to let you all know of an incident that happened yesterday.

A friend was leaving work at Aramingo diner at 5 PM, she started the car to heat it up (remember there was wet snow coming down). Her rear defroster isn't working and she had to get out of the car to remove the snow before she could back up. While she was removing the snow, a man came from Aramingo side of Petco walked up to her and asked which way was Aramingo and Torresdale. She told him and he started to walk away. He then walked over to the driver side of the car and told her not to do anything stupid because he had a gun; then he jumped into the car and sped off with her car and purse.

The police were there almost immediately after getting the call. Fortunately, she is fine physically but is emotionally wrecked.

Please be careful; there are all kinds out there especially this time of year.

glad to hear the car is back. how is your friend doing though? i have been through some pretty scary things while living in philly and i know that sometimes no matter how strong of a person you are, these things will shake you up. for me the worst part was the nightmares at night. i would be fine during the day, but then sleep would not come easy and my dreams would be quite disturbing. let her know that with time, things will get better and she will remember, with help from friends and family (and message boards like this) that people are generally good.

hope the holidays are good for her....and EVERYONE!!!

Thanks. The car is now outside her house with lots of security devices on it because she hasn't had the locks on the car changed yet. She still is shaken up; in fact, she hasn't even gotten into the car. She feels violated and I can understand that. Its funny how our minds work; she wasn't touched but feels like she has been personally violated.

I can remember when my car was broken into and ransacked; I was so upset that I wouldn't go into my apartment alone for days.

I will pass your well wishes along to her. And, you are so right, message boards serve a great service to those who use them; advising us of good things in the area and sometimes the bad which makes us more aware of our surroundings. Who knows? This forum may make it easier to catch a creep or prevent something terrible happening to one of us.

This is scary and it could have been the same guy. My friend's car was found on the 3300 block of either Martha or Malta. She was so shocked that the car was found and the reception on the phone was bad. I forgot to ask her if her license plate was still on the car. I'll find that out over the weekend.

Update

The police found the car on Tuesday. It wasn't destroyed; the glove compartment was pried opened but that was really the extent of the vandalism. She is having her locks replaced on the car and having it painted another color. The police fingerprinted the car and only found prints of her grandchildren.

She was very lucky. And, for the rest of you -- remember be wary of your surroundings and please be careful.

As of yesterday, no. If I hear anything, I'll pass the info along.

Everyone, please be extra cautious.
