Help me settle a bet...

How would you rank these colleges:

- Bryn Mawr College
- Villanova University
- St. Joseph's University
- Swarthmore College
- Haverford College
- Penn State

1 being the highest and 5 being the lowest, maybe with a note of how you view the college. What I'm trying to figure out is how the general public perceives these schools. "Ranking" just means how you personally perceive them.

Swarthmore
Bryn Mawr
Haverford
Villanova
Penn State
St Joe's

I was a bit of a US News & World Report geek while I was in school so this may not reflect the general perception.

Strictly on perceived

Strictly on perceived academics I'd go:
Swarthmore
Haverford
Bryn Mawr
Penn State (main campus only)
Villanova
St. Joe's

If you want to include the entire Penn State system, I'd drop them below Nova. St. Joe's is a nice school, but it's academic reputation is pretty weak in the area and non-existent in the outside world.

For a little context, our

For a little context, our bet has to do with athletics and professional programs, and and the effect of them on perceptions by people outside of academia. As in, schools like Villanova and PSU are regarded by many as being "better" than schools like Swat, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr, by many, based on athletics and the number of professional programs. (i.e. Villanova and PSU produce MBAs, lawyers, and accountants, plus they have recognized athletics programs, so many people regard them as better schools).

Full disclosure: I went to Villanova for undergrad, Steph went to Bryn Mawr. (In hindsight, I would have saved cash and gone to PSU or Temple.) We both went to graduate school at Temple.

It's more of an academic debate on how people perceive things and why.

My rankings will differ

nick-bug's picture

My rankings will differ considerably if we are talking about the quality of specific academic programs, or the quality of the basketball team. With that said, my general impressions are below. i've added some comments for flavor:

1. Swarthmore: a serious school with a serious academic reputation.
2. (tie) Haverford: Rich kids school, but strong academics
Bryn Mawr: Ditto
4. Villanova: Undergrduate party school; good undergraduate engineering school; some excellent graduate programs (MBA and Law)
5. St Joe's: Very good quality of students; not always the best faculty.
6. Penn State: It's reputation as a party school precedes it; my impression of the programs at the satellite campuses does it no favors.

These are just my impressions. For the record, I attended Villanova.

PSU alum here - and yes,

PSU alum here - and yes, you're right about the not wanting debt angle/good education for the money, especially if the person went to Main for their entire academic career.

Villanova/Swarthmore/Bryn Mawr/Haverford - overpriced.

St. Joe's - good local school

I went to BM (for grad

I went to BM (for grad school, maybe that's different). I'm not from the Main Line, I do wear black tights, I didn't major in English.

my perceptions: PSU: too

stein's picture

my perceptions:

PSU: too much variation in student population to accurately stereotype. could be a really good student who just wanted an education that wouldnt leave him/her in mountains of student loan debt, could be a jerkoff.

bryn mawr/swarthmore/haverford: rich kids but good students

villanova: total d-bags all around. high cost probably hides a lesser education than similarly priced institutions.

st. joes: I have no idea what kind of school they are (at least its better than being villanova)

That's basically the stereotypes I was referring to.

Is it still a sterotype if its true?

St. Joes....smarter than Penn State, but there's a saint in there, eh!
Villanova...better at sports, more disciplined, thanks to priests.
