Slots Hearings Got a Little Rowdy

"Labor members booing and waving signs, a noisy street demonstration, and veiled insults: Now that's the way public hearings in Philadelphia are supposed to go."

Noisy slots hearings - that's more like it

Im thinking population density might be a reason these two areas shouldnt be compared. Also, one is in the city, one is not in the city. Besides being near residential properties these two locations have nothing comparable. Sugarhouse is right at the waterfront where a huge population travels to for recreation and business. No one goes to that area of Bensalem for reasons other than living there... or that casino. Sure, the Outback Steakhouse is right up there like Osteria and Lebec fin,...

When I drive in Bensalem I'm pretty sure there's as much traffic running through Street Road as on Delaware, if not more... There's only ONE block on street road that is considered residential only in the 4-5mile stretch that goes through Bensalem... the rest of it is all businesses...

Where is our waterfront used for recreation? I'm curious, because the only place I can think of is Penn Treaty park... otherwise they're all dirt lots filled with trash and burned out stolen cars or warehouses that are falling apart. Almost any other community along the river have nice waterfronts where families can walk the entire length, with restaurants, businesses and what not. And where sugarhouse is no one has been back there to be on the riverfront in years - unless they've been trespassing - and before that how many actually went to the club there?

LeBec Fin and Osteria aren't in fishtown... fishtown doesn't even have an outback... just that fine Applebee's establishment.. yum...

Trust me on this i travel both roads 7 days a week on peak n off peak hrs. But im only talking del ave say between 95 ramps and dock st, i cant speak for rest well up until wash ave. Believe when I tell you st rd is a mess. And population wise philly has bensalem area beat but if you want to strictly talk within the vicinity of SH location and Philly park location philly park is a more congested area, but I will pay more attention when driving past everyday n get back to you

I disagree. Del ave is 3 lanes each direction. Though Street rd is bad, because population in that area has swelled a bit but there's 1.5 million people in philadelphia, with the most dense population being near cc .

We're still the unwashed masses, according to them, and anyone who comes in to give jobs/assistance/change is going to be showered with roses."

I think that's a crucial point. Fishtown is still being viewed thru a Wayback Machine.

To be true, though, many many Fishtowners have tunnel vision. They see only the potential of jobs, and don't care about anything else. The people who have greater concerns about crime and traffic and blight are looked upon as somehow effete, not understanding that the most important thing is the potential of that $20K-a-year job...which they probably won't get anyway.

I disagree with you on this. Many Fishstowners do not have tunnel vision. Yes, we see the potential of jobs and we do care about everything else. We've met with Sugarhouse and worked on the CBA which specifically addresses the concerns of the surrounding neighbors (trash, security, and yes JOBS). The jobs are not high paying, but they're not starting at 20K either. We have numerous people working at WalMart and KMart for alot less that what Sugarhouse will pay (with benefits). The CBA also guarantees jobs for area residents along with internships and training. As far as blight goes, once again, Fishtown is an area that will not go down in blight as other neighborhoods have. Too many people care about living here. I'm hoping some of this new business will give these kids a chance to work at something they'll enjoy and stay away from the lure of selling drugs. Gambling is everywhere in this city. Turn on Comcast and you can place a bet on your television. You can bet on your computer and at the corner store. It's always going to be around and the casino isn't going to be the catalyst for compulsive gamblers. They're already compulsive, just like an alcholic will find a drink regardless if it's across the street or in another state. Sugarhouse is our hope and it's not tunnel vision.

HOLY CRAP! what thread did that quote come from? not this thread. Duh.

gambling addiction is a serious problem... so is alcoholism... and if you take a walk up girard ave between palmer & front there are at least 5 bars that I can think of off the top of my head. then just head from girard to jefferson on front st & there are 2 more bars. and then all of the bars just off the main street... like on belgrade, thompson, cedar, susquehanna... i'm thinking there are at least 15-20 bars in a very small area. why would a community as small as fishtown need so many drinking establishments?

i posted a few days ago about the crime/traffic problems associated with casinos... i've only been to 2 areas with casinos - bensalem and atlantic city. even though AC opened approx the time I was born, many i know have told me AC was always a slum and filled with crime before the casinos came in. and bensalem seems to be doing pretty good right now... widened street road going into the park (street rd still being smaller than delaware ave)... Bensalem has a police dept of approx 90 officers to cover all tours of duty around the clock - where as the 26th alone has close to 250officers in that district alone.

if bensalem can keep crime down in those areas with a much smaller dept, why do you think our officers wouldn't be able to?
it may actually cause the city to HIRE more police officers, which we are in need of...
