Tiffin (Indian takeout)

Larry99's picture

I didn't want to see this get buried in the old Indian/Pakistani restaurant thread so I'm starting a new one. I've been thinking for as long as I've lived in Fishtown (13 yrs) that a solid Indian takeout/delivery place was one thing missing around here. I can't tell you how happy I am that one finally opened! It's called Tiffin and is actually located in NoLibs at 710 W Girard Ave but they deliver to Fishtown too! This fills such a void for us as we love Indian food as an alternative to Chinese or Pizza.

The website www.Tiffin.com is a bit confusing as it reflects the traditional Indian concept of pre-arranged weekday delivery but they do have regular 'everyday' menu that you can see at

www.Tiffinstore.com

...just click 'Menus' on the left and you'll get their menu in Adobe Acrobat form. This website doesn't seem to be totally complete yet as some of the other links such as 'on-line ordering' and 'hours' aren't working yet. However, I called them (215-922-1297) on Saturday evening at about 7pm and had no problem placing an order for delivery. We ordered up some saag paneer, chicken tandor, vegetable simosas and onion naan. Our order was delivered within a 1/2 hr and the food was excellent!

Tiffin rocks!

You must have a ton of food left qbert! We spent $22 for 2 people and still have enough for lunch today.

I have a lot of rice left over... but not much of the other stuff because I ate A LOT. I made my meat-loving boyfriend eat some of the small amount of leftovers that I had and he loved it, which is rare for him.

I loved the friend potato patty-things as appetizers (I forget the correct Indian name).

Don't feel bad, Qbert. Tommy

Don't feel bad, Qbert. Tommy and I have ordered from there twice in 4 days. That's right, Friday we got vegetable samosas, naan, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and delicious gulab jamens for dessert. We had it for dinner and for lunch again on Sunday.

Last night, after being out all day, we decided to indulge AGAIN. This time we got butter chicken, cheese with peas (something paneer) and gulab jamens...again!

Everything has been incredibly delicious so far and I'm thrilled to have good indian food, close to home. SO YUMMY!!

We tried it last night and

We tried it last night and it was really good! You must have a ton of food left qbert! We spent $22 for 2 people and still have enough for lunch today. The dining room looks pretty much finished, but it wasn't open yet for eating in. They were really nice and seemed very busy when we went to pick up. Yay for yummy Indian food!

NK you crack me up Smiling Mmmmmm Kitty Curry! (sorry Qbert - totally kidding)

That's cool...

I actually ordered from there tonight and went a little crazy... spent almost $40 on all kinds of stuff. I have lots of leftovers! I love when I order food for just myself and the people at the take out place give me enough forks and spoons for 4 people. Makes me feel like a complete pig.

Great stuff... I had all vegetarian stuff, so I can't say anything about the meat entrees being good or not, but I enjoyed what I had. Highly recommended!

When foodies began showing up for budget-priced takeout, he served them. Now, he said Monday, he's expanding Tiffin.com into a 30-seat dine-in space called Tiffin Store (710 W. Girard Ave., 215-922-1297).

We ordered dinner Sunday night at 5pm and they were indeed open for delivery or takeout. When we picked up the food and noticed the place is getting ready for sit-down dining. We asked when they'd have the dining room open they said they're planning on being ready for sit-down service "sometime this week".

Oh, the food was great too. Big servings, almost 2 meals worth for each main course. We got a mix of meat and vegetarian meals, everything was quite good.

I guess the rule of thumb for the websites would be:
tiffin.com: Pre-ordered delivery/take-out of 'special' meals Mon-Fri.
tiffinstore.com: Delivery, take-out, and restaurant page with a 'regular' menu for lunch/dinner 7 days a week.

Three cheers for a new delivery option besides pizza and Chinese!

Was wondering about the serving sizes. Great to hear that they are generous. Unbelievable given the inexpensive price of the tiffins!
