4 am Susquehanna and Girard Avenues....
Two young boys, (and I mean young, maybe ten and twelve years old) where playing stickball this morning in Wilson's Check Cashing Parking Lot.
C'mon now folks, its FOUR IN THE MORNING for God's sake...how can a little kid be out playing in the exit ramp of 95 at FOUR IN THE MORNING? (Yes, the pitcher was in Girard Avenue, while the batter stood tword the wall).
I can understand how hard it is to keep track of teenagers, but if you don't have a handle on your kids at age ten, you better just give them over to the Department of Correction now.
I guess a better question would be, where are the parents?

Just wanted to put in a plug for an event that's happening at Germ Books on July 30th. (I posted it on the calendar.) I've recently become involved with an amazing group of people who have founded the Philly Spells Writing Center, after being inspired by an organization on the west coast called 826 Valencia. The goal of the organization is to get Philly kids into writing. Many of the people that are involved are people who enjoy writing and worry that our schools do not encourage it enough. We have alot of famous writers on our advisory board, including Jennifer Weiner, author of the famous "In Her Shoes" and the new best seller "Best Friends Forever."

The organization is putting together fun writing workshops for kids all over the city and I noticed a need for one in our neighborhood, so I hooked our programming people up with Germ Books and we now have an event for kids in the Fishtown area! Please please please bring your little ones to this exciting event! If it is successful, we will have more events at Germ!!

I'm getting involved with the fundraising committee and will post more info about our exciting fundraising events as they become definite!

I am seeing some need for help in the neighborhood with children in the spectrum.
I am a teacher with a Master's Degree in Special Education and extensive training in autism. I was a teacher for an early childhood intervention unit for children with autism for many years.
I was also attending a PhD in early childhood autism at UT Austin, which I had to withdraw for personal reasons.
In other words, I can be of some help to my neighbors and am willing to do so.
If you need some coaching and ideas, please let me help.

I have a six year old.... soon to be seven, and I am afraid either there is something wrong with her, or there is something wrong with me. I am a young mother, she is my frist child, and she is BEYOND LOVED. Shes is the typical spoiled by her grandparents... to the point of no return... lol. She lives in my house with her step father who loves her, myself, and our newborn. She had a speech delay, I had her tested through the state for anyt mental defficiencies, she had an IEP for school but has since progressed and is at a level with all the other children... but theres still something wrong... something not quite right. Its not that she's impulsive, but its almost like she is so internal that she simply doesnt think. You can tell her every day, in every possible parenting technique to not do something, but in the end she'll do it and stare at you blankly. Its a bunch of little things that addup to one frustrated and confused me, and i just want to know, is this normal? IE. Tell her the babies going down for a nap, and for NO REASON is she to come down stairs unless she is hurt. Ask her if she understands (yes) Ask her to repeat the request (she repeats it) she goes upstairs, baby goes to sleep, she comes running down the stairs and says something..wakes the baby... stairs at you blankly.. NOTONCE, NOT TWICE, BUT EVERY TIME. It hasnt sunk in. Tell her to sit and eat her dinner... she gets up. Tell her again... she gets up... explain to her why she has to... she gets up. She retains NOTHING. But she can tell you about Battle Guns (some new toy her age group is into) or a movie she likes. This morning she threw up all over the house... poor baby does this alot, she has a sensitive stomach. She doesnt tell me until later WHERE she threw up, I have to go hunt it down... its like it doesnt matter to her. She's to the point where she is so careless and uncareful that she is a danger to herself and other children. I see kids her age cross the street, and play with each other... and she cant do those things. She ddoesnt play well with other kids because she cant really grasp the concept of playing what they want to play, its only what she wants..... its like its her world and anything past that she doesnt understand... just looks at you blankly. Is this normal? Any parents of kids her age PLEASE respond... Im to a breaking point and everything I hjave tried is notworking!
