FISHTOWN IN THE NEWS

Inky Editorial on Pools

dan's picture

"City officials said they chose the opened pools based on their average usage, size, condition, location, and accessibility by foot. But they must have missed something. How else do you explain that nearly all of the pools were reopened in some districts, while in others, such as Fishtown and South Philadelphia, fewer than half the pools were reopened?"

"Breakfast at Sulimay's" on NPR!

dan's picture

I just turned on the radio and heard some familiar voices...
NPR's "Weekend All Things Considered" was doing a story on "Breakfast at Sulimay's"!

That's right, our favorite older music reviewers have gone national.

How long 'til Joe gets his own column in Spin?

Here's the story:

for those not familiar with "Breakfast at Sulimay's", here's the homepage:

Pool article in the Inq.

gorilla1's picture

Check it out..
Included is an e-mail I sent the councilman Clarke. You can do the same. or call him at
215-686-3443.

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/49328362.html

Dear Councilman Clarke,
Has there been any progress on getting more pools open in y(our) district?

Here is a recent article about the lack of pools in our district.

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepage/49328362.html

It really is unfair that we have so many closed pools in our area (5 out 14 are open). Ms. Slawson's response in this article still does not adequately explain why our district was so severely hit with pool closures in light of the facts, which contradict the rationale she has outlined:

1. We still do not have pools available within walking distance from our closed pools.
2. We have pools (particularly Cione) that have been recently refurbished and are efficiently functional.
3. We have pools (particularly Ledderer) that are traditionally well attended and have few incidents of crime taking place.(if turf wars are to be prevented, this is the pool to remain open. There is a police station right next to the pool).
4. It will be considerably less expensive for the city to maintain at least one pool than to pay for the wasted water expelled by rec center sprinklers and opened hydrants.

We hope that you will be an AGGRESSIVE advocate for your community in this matter before it is too late for our children and families.

Barbary--what's the story?

dishtown's picture

Hey, I've just read a little about the Barbary. What's it like? Is there an age range--I see that they have all ages shows sometimes, but then there's the Madonna/Prince/Michael night coming up that would totally appeal to my 38 year old self.

Anyone have insight? Any semi-oldheads been there?

JB in Liverpool!

rechd's picture

We went to JB yesterday for a steak sandwich (not as good as the kabob)and met a couple from Liverpool, who mentioned that they learned about JB on the Liverpool local newspaper. JB is international! Even without a TV.
A note: the couple stand beside our table talking and blocking the passage of pedestrians.

...and apparently, Paesano's is in Fishtown.
